On 22 February 2012, the Istanbul Bar Association Foreign Relations Center held the second conference on ‘Legal Implications of Social Media – II’ at the Orhan Adli Apaydın Conference Hall. Delivering the opening speech, Istanbul Bar Association Board Member Attorney Hasan Kılıç stated that social media has gained prominence in today’s information era, noting its emergence alongside the internet and its significant contribution to freedom of expression.
Moderated by Attorney Elif Sevüktekin, Executive Board Member of the Istanbul Bar Association Foreign Relations Center, the session continued in English and included a keynote lecture by Prof. Alastair Mullis, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of East Anglia. Prof. Mullis addressed topics such as the effect of the internet and social media on commercial law, the treatment of online networks under Anglo-American tort law, and the intersection of freedom of expression with crimes against public morality committed via online platforms.
