Attorney Elif Sevüktekin stressed that refugees and asylum seekers should fall under the scope of mandatory defense counsel.
At the seminar ‘Borders and Refugees – A Syrian Case,’ held by the Istanbul Bar Association Foreign Relations Center on 16 February 2012, Attorney Elif Sevüktekin proposed that Article 150/2 of the Türkiye Criminal Procedure Code be amended to ensure that refugees, asylum seekers, and potential applicants for asylum fall within the scope of mandatory defense counsel. She further elaborated on her proposal by referring to the relevant provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code, the 1951 Geneva Convention, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
As an Executive Board Member of the Istanbul Bar Association Foreign Relations Center, Attorney Elif Sevüktekin emphasized the necessity of amending the Regulation on the Appointment of Defense Counsel and Representatives, as well as the procedures and principles governing related payments under the Criminal Procedure Code.
